I'm really not clear on why a hurricane in the Gulf means Bush and Cheney won't attend the GOP National Convention, but I am pretty sure I just heard a collective sigh of relief from the entire Party.

I believe they were seeking any excuse to keep them away. A hurricane is the perfect one. No one wants to be reminded of how Bush handled Katrina, especially Republicans.

To be fair and balanced for just one tiny moment...Bush wants to be seen as paying attention to the Nation's Problems (like another city-destroying storm) rather than to party politics. We all know that it's bullshit and that he'll have a television tuned to nonstop coverage of the convention if he's not actually present, but I believe that's the reasoning behind it.
