Standing on a cliff of the new year, peering cautiously over the edge, fearful of what awaits.

No one could have ever dreamed when 2001 would hold (okay, except maybe Tom Clancy, right?). 2002 was full of the anticipated and feared that never happened, combined with the self-fulfilling prophesy of the Bush administration. Our depression-recession cheerily called an "economic downturn" is really beginning to blossom according to plan. The axis of evil is playing along nicely, though North Korea may be getting a bit ahead of the game. Apparently, for the time being, they're supposed to be *less* evil than Iraq. Pretty smart on their part to step things up right now, if you ask me. Is anyone else baffled about the administration's non-response to North Korea's ousting inspectors, thumbing their nose at the IAEA and accusing the US of plotting to attack them?
I wake up every morning by listening to NPR. I usually hear at least an hour of news and other programming before I surrender fully to conciousness. I realize that I hear and retain more than I think as news proliferates to me throughout the day and I hear things that I already knew, but didn't remember knowing. More often than not lately, though, I hear something at alerts me to heart-pounding wakefulness. The catch is I'm usually not sure I heard it correctly, or if I've intermingled something rather benign with some horrible dream. Yesterday it was something fuzzy about suspected terrorists getting into the country via Canada - as in they're here now and we can't find them. Today it was that al qaeda has 12 or so container ships floating around full of - what? explosives? - who knows? Couple that with the information that North Korea thinks we're planning to attack them - honestly all they would have to do to support that claim is to quote the text of the now-infamous "Axis of Evil" speech - and a girl wakes up kinda nervous.
On the bright (and much more micro) side .... some new year's resolutions:
keep in better touch with family and friends in NY
use exact change more often!
run three times a week (10 miler in April? oy. who's chasing me?)
meditate more
That's probably enough for now.

And, finally, in the immortal words of the Notorious CHO:

Love yourself without reservation,
Love each other without restraint.

Happy New Year.

Love each other without restraint.

Or if you must love each other with restraint, make sure the cuffs are well padded...

Hugs and new year's greetings from sunny Kansas City!
