Democrats have used the filibuster threat to block 10 of President Bush's 205 picks for district and appellate court positions.

During the Clinton Presidency, the Republican majority on the Senate Judiciary Committee alone squashed at least 60 judicial nominations by refusing to so much as hold hearings, which is as effective as a filibuster. In March, 2000, Majority Leader Frist himself participated in the filibuster against Clinton judicial nominee Richard Paez.

Nonetheless, the Republican zealots are circling their wagons and preaching to the faithful that getting rid of this "judicial tyranny to people of faith," is essential to the future of liberty and democracy.

My only hope is that their attempts to mingle faith and politics in order to manipulate their base will fly back in their faces ala Terri Schiavo. Maybe this time they'd learn.
