joy of rain

once in a while (and less than that in DC) after a series of hot days, a late-afternoon storm brings great relief.
once in a while (and less than that in DC) summer rain is big drops, cool and driving, persistent and constant.
once in a while (and almost never in DC) I abandon my umbrella, stop running to avoid the drops, and just enjoy getting soaked.

today was once in a while.

do you remember how it feels to laugh as rain drips off the end of your nose, and your shirt gets heavier by the second?

do you remember how it feels to strip out of your soaking clothes and step into a deliciously hot shower as soon as you get home?

as my friend Holly used to tell me on many sorts of days:
it's a wonderful day, and it's great to be alive.

tiny blades of joy

I try to do that at least once a year.

In the meantime, when I come home from work and park in my asphalt driveway next to my concrete sidewalk... I have a tiny wodge of grass to cross to get to my mailbox, and I am frequently seen standing in my driveway, slipping off my shoes so I can walk barefoot in the grass for about ten steps to get my mail.

It's not as comprehensive a joy as total immersion in a summer rain, but it suffices on dry days.
