You really don't know paranoia until you've lived in DC. It's not uncommon for buildings, parks, streets, and Metro stations to be closed because of a suspicious package. Sometimes it's an empty box, sometimes an unattended bag, once in a while it's garbage.

Today it was this:

No, really.

There's an article about it here.

For the curious, that's one Metro stop and about a mile from my apartment.

they were just having one of those days on the green line. They emptied a train at U street because of a purse at 8:40. and all trains had been stopped on the green/yellow line due to a sick passenger prior to *that*.

you know, "is that your bag?"
no one claimed the bag, so the train goes out of service, dumps everyone out, and then an announcement goes over the PA, "if you lost a purse, please come to the station managers' booth"

I would have been exceedingly pissed if I had been on that train, or waiting for that train. what is 5 minutes of a train full of people's time worth?

holy shit! that's never happened to me. that sucks.

my officemate was telling me his train was stopped for a sick passenger, and when that was finally resolved, they had a door problem. i would have killed everyone.

Our bomb scares are just people paying parking tickets with a box of pennies. Yours is more entertaining at least.

So that's what it was. I caught the tail end of the mess trying to get lunch. Luckily, they pulled down the caution tape minutes before I arrived.

My co-worker and I were on the Orange Line when we saw the announcement that CoHi was closed for a suspicious package. I got all excited that my 'hood is high enough up on the food chain to have suspicious packages now. Back in the early days of me living here it was more like you'd be lucky to have someone call in to report that a box of body parts had been left in an alley.

But learning it was an art installation? A POLAR BEAR art installation no less? That's how you know you've made it.
